Junior East Cork Championship

Mayfield 0-6 Lisgoold 2-4

Lisgoold Ladies travelled to Mayfield on Saturday night with the weight of nearly 18 months without a competitive win adding to the pressure of a Championship encounter.

Lisgoold started well and following great pressure from a youthful Lisgoold forward line yielded two early scores in the first 10 minutes. Leah Hogan was clearly on form with both early well taken points. Mayfield responded well and drew level following a long period of pressure which saw the ball rarely leave the Lisgoold half.

There were great defensive displays from Maureen O’Riordan and Linda Croston to ensure that the persistent Mayfield attach were kept scoreless for the remainder of the game. Lisgoold scored a further point to leave the half time score at 3 points to 2 in favour of Lisgoold. Lisgoold emerged a changed side for the second half with a more determined performance. Johanna Lane gave an untiring performance at midfield which kept Lisgoold on top for most of the second half.

Then 10 minutes into the second half, a penetrating run by Taylor Bradley from 30 metres resulted in Taylor blasting the ball to the back of the net to the delight of the travelling support. Mayfield responded with a point immediately. Play moved from end to end in the next ten minutes with both sides exchanging points. Lisgoold then raised the green flag a second time, following great work by Brid Cullinane, Taylor Bradley again struck the back of the net the major to put Lisgoold into a 5 point lead. Mayfield piled on the pressure to score a further point but it was not enough and Lisgoold Ladies held on to seal a famous and long awaited victory.

They now move on to play Aghada in the Championship Final.
