Inch Rovers 2 – 8 Lisgoold 0-5
Lisgoold Ladies made a welcome return to Championship football in Killeagh on Friday night with a tough encounter against a very experienced Inch team.
Lisgoold made a great start to this years Championship and in the opening 15 minutes matched the home side exchanging early scores. Edel O’Riordan slotted over two early frees to ensure that Lisgoold were level after 10 mins. The home side began to find their rhythm and scored a well taken goal from play. Lisgoold displayed great resilience and responded immediately with an excellent passage of play down the left side of field resulting in a point from Brid Cullinane. Further pressure from Lisgoold through Catherine O’Connell resulted in the home side conceding further free. Lisgoold were unlucky not to get a goal as Edel O’Riordan’s free crashed off the crossbar and went over for a point. The first half saw tremendous performances all round from the Lisgoold team with Linda Croston and Elinor O’Keefe and Eaine O’Brien giving good displays in defence. A series of superb saves from Trish Walsh in goals ensured that there was only a point in the game at half time with Inch going in ahead 1 – 2 to 0 – 4.
The second half saw Inch making a number of changes that resulted in energised attack. Lisgoold were under pressure for the early part of the half and Inch forced home the advantage by scoring a goal and two points in the first 15 minutes of the half. Lisgoold responded again with good play from Maureen O’Riordan and Liz Connery. Following good work up the right Lisgoold were unlucky not to score a goal with Norma Woods pressurising the home defence. In the last ten minutes Lisgoold began to press further forward and were rewarded with a further score from Edel O’Riordan. Inch brought the scoring to a close with a further series of points. Good individual performances were given by Keara Woods, Tanya Kingston, Elaine Lochyer and Jackie Hogan.
This was an excellent performance by the Lisgoold team who maintained the pressure on Inch throughout the game. Inch now progress to the semi-final, with Lisgoold going into Round 2 of the Championship in a confident mood after their best game of the year to date.
